How Often Should a Water Softener Regenerate?

Have you ever heard a strange sound coming from your water softener? Have you ever wondered why it tends to make that sound every once in a while? Has your water softener in Texas been making that noise?

The water softener makes that sound when it is regenerating. Water softener regeneration is a vital process that allows this fantastic machine to work properly and provide you with a water supply that can help you live a clean and healthy lifestyle.

The question is: How often should a water softener regenerate?

We will help you understand the process and how the innovative Vortech System we use at Shell Water Systems can make a difference.

What is Water Softener Regeneration?

Water softeners remove the excess minerals in the water supply to make it healthier for consumption and safer for general use in your house. They work by using a process called ion exchange.

The hard water from your home’s main water supply essentially passes through a bed of resin. The resin captures the magnesium and calcium ions that are making the water hard. The water softener keeps removing the magnesium and calcium ions from the hard water, but it eventually becomes saturated, and it cannot remove the hardness effectively.

This is the point where the water softener regeneration comes in. Salt is necessary to remove the minerals that have accumulated on the resin. The water softener regeneration cycle revitalizes the water softener in the process so it can continue operating efficiently.

How Often Should a Water Softener Regenerate?

The regular regeneration of a water softener is ideal since it keeps the resin bed active and working consistently. The frequency of this cycle can depend on several factors, including:

●       The hardness of the water

●       The amount of iron in your water

●       How much water you use

●       Resin tank capacity

●       The age of your system

●       Chemical deterioration caused by oxidants and other chemicals like chlorine

Typically, the regeneration should occur after every 12 to 14 days or it should occur after a predetermined gallons of water that you use. You can set the number of gallons used before it regenerates through the water softener’s valve.

There are a wide variety of water softeners in the market and have different types of valves. The valve operates as the central processing unit that also determines when the regeneration cycle should begin. There are two types of regeneration used in water softeners:

  1. Time Initiated Regeneration This type of valve sets the system to regenerate after a predetermined time. It could be after a specific number of days and at a time when your water usage is low. The setting is best left for a water treatment professional to decide based on the hardness of the water and the water usage in your home.
  2. Demand Regeneration A valve with demand regeneration setting will keep track of the water usage and sends the softener into regeneration mode after a certain amount of water passes through the softener. This is a more efficient system that can change the regularity of the regeneration based on how much water you are using rather than on how many days have passed.

What is the Vortech System?

The Vortech System is an innovative water distribution technology that we recommend using in your water conditioning system. It is a high flow smart tank that gets you the best out of high-efficiency valves.

The process is simple.

In a traditional system, there is a bed of gravel that helps with the water softener regeneration. With the new high flow Vortech System, there is no longer a need for gravel under bedding.

The system can facilitate a more effective and efficient backwash cycle while reducing overall costs. The Vortech System requires up to 30% less backwash flow to successfully regenerate the water softener. The high flow design gets the best efficiency out of the valve technology.

There is no need for re-bedding because the dip tube is permanently attached to the distributor. When a professional is servicing the valve, the distributor can stay in place. The removal of gravel from the picture reduces the cost and weight of the product. It comes with a self-cleaning nozzle design, and it increases the softening capacity due to the improved flow.

The Difference Between Vortech Tanks and Standard Tanks

Vortech technology is arguably one of the most important innovations in the water treatment industry. Water passes through the mineral tank, forcing the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions to attach to negatively charged resin beads. With the necessary amount of water used or time passed, the system pulls a brine solution that flushes the mineral tank to recharge the beads.

Regular filter tanks use gravel and are prone to channeling. This is when the water can bypass the media and travel up the side of the media. A Vortech tank prevents channeling to provide you with cleaner and crisper water without the hardening calcium and magnesium ions.

The result is a far more efficient water softener with greater capacity. It also saves thousands of gallons of water usage over its lifetime. Additionally, it reduces the amount of salt necessary for the softening process.

Benefits of Using a Water Softener With Vortech Tank

If you use our Vortech Tank, you will notice several advantages with the water supply in your home.

In the Bathroom

You will need to use less soap and shampoo because they will both lather far better than they used to. Your hair and skin will feel noticeably cleaner and retain moisture better. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about mineral deposits or soap scum.

In the Kitchen

You will need far less dishwashing liquid for all your dishes. Everything will be much cleaner and spot-free without the gray deposits left on your glass by hard water. It will also be easier on your hands and not leave them feeling dry.

In the Laundry

Your clothes will feel far softer, cleaner, and last longer due to the improved efficiency of the water softener.

Plumbing and Appliances

Appliances around your home like the water heater, washing machine, and dishwasher will last longer and run better.

How Often

Clean water is essential for a clean and healthy lifestyle. It reduces the risk of several medical conditions caused by impure water; it can save your kidneys from damage and prevent other medical conditions from aggravating.

Using our water conditioning systems that use Vortech Tanks can allow you to make the most of these advantages while reducing your overall costs and making the process greener. If you want to purify your water supply with a more efficient, cost-effective, and safer system, Shell Water Systems is here to help.
