How We Remove Heavy Metals from Water
At Shell Water Systems, we utilize a multi-stage filtration approach to effectively reduce heavy metals—such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and chromium—that can be present in municipal water/well water supplies. Our systems are engineered with industry-leading components, including KDF-55 media and catalytic carbon to ensure cleaner, safer water for your home.
KDF-55 Filtration
KDF-55 (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) is a high-purity copper-zinc alloy that removes heavy metals through a redox (oxidation-reduction) reaction. When water passes through the KDF media:
- Electrons are transferred, causing contaminants like lead, mercury, and other dissolved metals to become insoluble and bind to the media.
- KDF-55 also inhibits bacterial growth, enhances the lifespan of carbon filters, and helps reduce chlorine and hydrogen sulfide—making it a powerful first line of defense.
Carbon Filtration
Catalytic Carbon follows KDF-55 in many of our systems. This stage:
- Adsorbs organic chemicals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Helps further reduce chlorine, chloramine, and taste/odor issues
- Works synergistically with KDF media to enhance heavy metal reduction performance
Reverse Osmosis (RO) Filtration
For maximum protection, our reverse osmosis systems provide ultra-fine filtration that removes up to 99% of total dissolved solids (TDS), including:
- Lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, chromium, cadmium, and more
- The semi-permeable RO membrane allows only water molecules to pass through, flushing contaminants away through a separate drain line
This is especially beneficial for drinking and cooking water, delivering the purest form of filtration available for residential use.
The Harmful Effects of Heavy Metals in Municipal Water
Even treated municipal water can contain trace levels of heavy metals, often from aging infrastructure, corroded pipes, industrial runoff, or groundwater contamination. Prolonged exposure may lead to:
- Neurological damage (especially in children, from lead or mercury)
- Kidney and liver toxicity
- Hormonal disruptions and developmental issues
- Increased risk of cancer (from long-term exposure to arsenic or chromium-6)
- Metallic taste, discoloration, and staining of fixtures and appliances
Protect Your Water—Protect Your Health
At Shell Water Systems, our filtration solutions are designed not only for performance but also for peace of mind—delivering cleaner, safer water that protects your family, plumbing, and appliances from the hidden dangers of heavy metals.
